At Market Infra Consulting we appreciate that the role of Bid Writer can be a stressful one. Despite the tight deadline and technical nature of the work, the job also has lots of benefits including client interaction and sector variety.

To give more of an insight into life as a Bid Writer at Market Infra we spoke to George Beard, who has been part of the team for over a year.

George discusses what he enjoys most about his role and the best things about working at Market Infra Consulting specifically.

What is your role at Market Infra?

I’ve been a Bid Writer at Market Infra since January 2020, supporting our clients across multiple sectors to create and develop winning tenders.

What does your role entail?

The core aspect of my role as a Bid Writer is to try and help our clients to create winning tender responses. This involves speaking to people within our clients’ businesses to extract the necessary information to draft a response (e.g., the unique selling points of the company, case studies and relevant processes and procedures). After these conversations, it is then my responsibility to get this information down on paper and draft a response that demonstrates why our client is the ideal partner for the customer.

Alongside this, there is also an element of market research in the form of competitor and customer analysis. This is crucial in developing an understanding of the market and what the customer is looking for in a potential partnership.

Outside my role as a Bid Writer, I write articles (or ‘Insight’ pieces) that look to further explore the sectors we work within. As part of this, we invite industry experts to talk about their perspective on the key challenges, issues and opportunities relevant to them. So far, I’ve had some great conversations with colleagues within the ET&D, and EV charge point sectors.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

I would say my favourite part of my job is the ability to meet and speak to some fantastic people across multiple industries, both in the UK and Ireland. Chatting to them and hearing about their experiences is something I really enjoy. Hopefully, as we make our way out of the pandemic, I’ll be able to meet these people in person for the first time.

Writing the responses is also something I enjoy. I studied History at Newcastle University, so being able to take the skills I learnt at university and develop them further as part of my job is something I really value.

What is the best thing about being a bid writer at Market Infra specifically?

Being a Bid Writer at Market Infra means I am constantly learning something new about the sectors we work in and that level of variety is something I do not think I’d be able to find anywhere else. So far, I’ve been able to write responses for tenders in sectors such as Rail, Water, ET&D, Gas Transmission, EV Charging, Smart Cities and Public Street Lighting. There is no sign that this list will stop growing any time soon!

However, perhaps the best thing about working for a small company like Market Infra is the relationships I’ve developed with my colleagues. We are a very close team and there is a real supportive atmosphere in this business. This also lends itself to a truly open and honest environment, where we can speak to the Managing Director about anything, and everybody’s input is truly valued.
