A Guide to Hydrogen

Our Net Zero specialist and Bid Consultant, George Beard is here to explain all you need to know about Hydrogen!

What it is, how it’s related to Net Zero, and how we’re involved!

What is Hydrogen power?

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Hydrogen power is the process of using hydrogen (either in gas or liquid form) as an energy source.

Hydrogen has numerous applications in the UK. This includes its use as a fuel for heating and transport, alongside uses in ammonia, methanol and steel production.

How is it related to Net Zero?

As an alternative to the traditional hydrocarbon-based fuels of petrol, diesel and natural gas, green hydrogen produces no greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during both extraction and usage.

Consequently, the UK government has recognised the importance of hydrogen in the pursuit of Net Zero, establishing a target of 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

The greenest way to produce hydrogen is by using an electrolyser directly connected to a renewable energy source, such as wind or solar farms.

Through this process, water is split into its constituent components, producing hydrogen. In addition, the by-products of oxygen and heat can be utilised elsewhere.

Depending on the electrolyser, medical-grade oxygen can be extracted for use in aerobic waste digestion or to accelerate industrial combustion processes.

Waste heat also presents certain horticultural, industrial and domestic application opportunities.

How is Market Infra involved?

Market Infra has recognised that the low-carbon hydrogen sector currently faces a big challenge. At present, virtually no low-carbon hydrogen is produced or used nationally, particularly to supply energy.

This means that a significant level of work is required to meet the UK Government’s target of 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Market Infra can help the low-carbon hydrogen sector throughout this journey by working smarter. We are currently supporting our clients from project inception all the way through to delivery.

This involves feasibility studies, business case development, funding or tender applications and project management, assisting in the creation of low-carbon hydrogen production in the UK.

Earlier this year, we supported Doncaster Council in the delivery of their Net Zero targets. We managed the development of a feasibility study assessing the creation of a hydrogen refuelling station to increase green hydrogen use in transport across Yorkshire.

Currently, we are working with our clients to produce funding applications to facilitate further green hydrogen projects.
